The Support Scheme for Rural Specialists is a program aimed at improving access to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities for specialist medical practitioners living and working in regional, rural and remote Australia. The Program is a joint initiative of the Committee of Presidents of Medical Colleges and Department of Health and Ageing and is funded by the Australian Government.

Under Round Seven of the Scheme, 12 Projects have been funded within Stream A and B of the program which will provide access to CPD and peer support for rural specialists.

Round Seven Projects will run from August 2007 until August 2008.

SSRS Round Eight

The Department of Health And Ageing has indicated that the SSRS will be funded for a 2009 Calendar year.

It is expected that a formal call for applications will be announced in the coming weeks with applications due late October and projects to commence January 2009. We would encourage Colleges to commence project development based on the current Round Seven Program model. Minor modifications are currently being made to the Guidelines for Accessing Project Funding and these will be forwarded to Colleges as soon as possible.

Annual SSRS 2008 Forum

This years Forum was held at the Airport Hilton Hotel, Melbourne, on Friday 4 July, 2008. Overall the forum received positive feedback from participants who enjoyed the opportunity to network with specialists and college staff, as well as engage in discussions surrounding learning outcomes from current Projects and potential future strategies to support specialists working in rural and remote Australia.

The interactive session around delivering peer review to the rural specialist was especially insightful and the SSRS Program Management Unit will be working to develop an informative paper on this topic to inform future SSRS Projects.

Several themes also emerged from the day, including ways in which SSRS Projects can better engage overseas trained specialists and trainees. The SSRS will be taking these factors into consideration prior to any future funding rounds.

The SSRS would like to thank all those who attended, especially the presenters on the day and the small group facilitators involved in the interactive session around delivering peer review to the specialist practising in rural and remote Australia.
